Architecture holds several designs and options for living that are still used today for contemporary builds. Two of the most popular additions to homes that have been used for centuries are conservatories and orangeries. Both these designs work as additional rooms to the home and are built as 'glass rooms.' With these specific designs, is a rich history that has led to some of the most luxurious looks in homes.

The beginning of conservatories and orangeries come from the 17th century. This became a popular method in architecture because of the invention of glass as a substantial architectural material. Typically, the glass rooms not only made a new architectural statement, but were also associated with an individual status as the glass was known as a more expensive element attached to different rooms. The larger conservatories were well known for entertaining guests and adding into the English style of building.

The orangeries followed close behind in development from conservatories. The difference in these two was based on the use of the rooms. The orangeries were not only used for entertainment, but ...
... also became a popular method for some of the older greenhouses. Oranges and citrus fruits were often grown in these areas and were popular for growing the fruits that were not able to live in the climate. This combined the glass provided to add sun light to the area, while providing a space for exotic fruits to grow. This was combined with a brick frame, as opposed to the conservatories, which have a hard wood frame. As the concept of orangeries became more popular, they also moved into becoming a method for entertainment among guests.

These two specific types of glass houses have led to contemporary styles that are now a part of architectural builds and designs. From the beginning of conservatories and orangeries are specific ideals that have led to new looks enjoyed by several. From a basic sun room used for relaxation to an area to entertain guests or to enjoy a different look, is the use of additional conservatories and orangeries to provide extra room to an enjoyable home.
