If you're trying to make a career out of writing online, and particularly if you are trying to compete against many of the offshore outsourcing companies, you'll find that the only way you can make money is to write in bulk. It is impossible to try and make a living writing online if you are only writing one or two articles a day.
Finding new and innovative ways to get articles done more quickly while still retaining the high level of quality and professionalism that your clients demand is the difference between a great writer who makes a living and a part-time writer that doesn't make any money at all.
Following these five simple tips, you should be able to increase your writing speed by at least 200%. Thinking about this in real dollars, if you are only able to write one are two 500 word articles at $5.00 a piece you will now be able to make $20.00 an hour vs. the $10.00 an hour you were making before.
So follow these simple steps and start making money!
Get A Nice Microphone
When I first started using voice recognition software I was simply using the microphone on my computers camera. It worked, ...
... but if there was any noise being made in the room at all it really affected the voice recognition software.
I decided to go out and get a nice microphone to use. I ended up just getting a generic headset microphone that cost about $30.00. It was probably the best investment I could have made for my writing career.
I have found that the voice recognition software now seems to "work better" because I'm having to do a lot less editing. I am also able to relax more as I write. I quite literally just kick back and talk into the microphone headset.
I highly recommend if you're going to go the voice recognition route, that you invest in a decent microphone. It can really make the difference.
Use The Appropriate Voice Recognition Software
I don't use any special voice recognition software. I thought about maybe downloading a torrent version of Dragon, but I decided against it. When I went to go look at how much the dragon software actually was, decided not to purchase it. For those of you who are into buying tools, you may want to get it.
But doing a quick search on Google and YouTube, I found that all windows 7 machines have a built in voice recognition system. It is what I use now. With a nice microphone, you get a really high percentage of accuracy.
The best part of all, is it didn't cost me a thing. So for me the low cost was appropriate. For some others, who are more particular about the voice recognition software, or who are more worried that the standard voice recognition software that comes with windows 7 isn't good enough, I would recommend only purchasing Dragon. I have used the demo a few times and it is pretty awesome.
It really depends on you. The voice recognition software that I use, the one that comes with windows 7, is able to write 150 words a minute. The system that I use to write articles doesn't require anything more than that.
Create An Outline
This is the one thing that I learn the hard way. I used to just try to do things off the top of my head. I would simply turn the voice recognition software on and let it rip.
Now what I like to do is do a quick Internet search on the topic I supposed to write about and copy and paste a few of the main points into a word document and then simply use those as points as speaking references for my article.
I have found that this works extremely well, and I am able to actually write much faster than if I were to do it the other way. The more freely your thoughts flow as you speak, the better the flow that ends up coming across in the article.
Write In Bulk
There are many different strategies in using voice recognition software to write more quickly, but this is my linchpin.
I will usually write multiple articles without editing. I usually just blast through as many articles as I can, then go back later and edit them. The point is, if you are going to worry about whether not the voice recognition software is picking up your exact words, and you stop every time you miss a word, it is not gonna to be any faster than if you just sit down and type it out.
The key is to just simply speak as clearly and concisely as you can in as long of a chunk as possible and allow the voice recognition software to catch what it can and then go back and edit it afterwards. As you know, editing is a much quicker task than the actual writing.
Take The Time To Edit
This is really where the rubber meets the road. Voice recognition software does not have 100% accuracy in capturing everything you say. Sometimes misspellings occur, sometimes there are major grammatical errors, and sometimes you just get so caught up in talking that you may not have even realized what you said sounds ridiculous.
One of the reasons I like to write in bulk is that I can come back and take the time to edit in bulk. By separating the two tasks, I am able to have two mindsets. These two different mindsets allow for a deeper focus on the task at hand. This results in faster writing and faster editing.
Following these five simple steps you are guaranteed to improve your speed and accuracy by at least 200%. In real dollars that is like giving yourself a massive raise. Good luck and write hard.
