The International Riesling Foundation was produced to assist customers much better appreciate the many virtues of Riesling. Much from the information on this website is derived, with gracious permission, in the Riesling Rules Book of Pacific Rim Winery. We hope this info will help you discover the grapes, the wines, the regions they come from, the foods they match with, and much more.
Riesling - Dry or Sweet?
Do you like dry wine? Sweet? Somewhere in between? What ever you favor, there's a Riesling for you. Riesling comes in much more "flavors" than any other wine. Some are "bone dry", with no genuine sweetness. Other people are "medium dry" with a hint of sweet, or "medium sweet" with even more, and some are quite simply "sweet". Indiana wineries have won numerous awards for their Riesling entries and also the future of Indiana wine is vibrant thanks to the Riesling varieties.
Taste
The natural grape sugar ...
... left within the wine is just certainly one of the elements defining the taste. The natural acid and pH offset the sugar, and the interplay of those elements in the end determines what you will taste. For instance, a Riesling with more residual sugar but high acid may well taste drier than one with less sugar and low acid.
Unfortunately, many customers still believe "Riesling = Sweet", and numerous Riesling producers do not give a lot info on their labels to assist customers know what taste to expect from a specific bottle. That is why the International Riesling Foundation developed a voluntary Riesling Taste Profile with suggested guidelines for winemakers along with a graphic design which we hope numerous will use on their back labels to help guide consumers. The design is shown beneath, with 4 different choices of wording and also the understanding that the winemaker will figure out exactly where to place the arrow.
Riesling vines are tough. They thrive in cold climates, on steep hillsides, and in marginal soil. The green- skinned grapes ripen later than many other varieties, and occasionally are left hanging on the vine to produce sweet late harvest wines or even ice wines when the grapes really freeze on the vines. Great wines are produced in the vineyard, so the important is for winemakers to harvest the grapes at the optimal balance of all-natural sugar, acid and pH.
Indiana Riesling has become certainly one of our favorites and we hope our readers will visit certainly one of the numerous quality Indiana wineries and try this versatile wine. Riesling was listed as certainly one of the leaders in the Indiana Wine Festival in Might 2012. Source: This Site
