What's On In Birmingham: The Jewel In The West Midlands Cultural Crown

Though it may be an iconic 21st Century shopping mecca, Birmingham has got much more to offer than just pure purchasing potential. This post industrial city boasts everything from cutting edge galleries and museums, through to stadium size music venues and a boutique clubbing scene. With so much on offer here's our what's on guide to the hidden highlights and local gems of Birmingham.
If you don't have much time or can't be bothered to pound the pavement trying to find out what's on in Birmingham, the Custard Factory is your one-stop-shop for all things cool and creative in the city. Alongside a clubbing venue, galleries and working artists, there are restaurants galore and independent shops, which basically means that you can hunker down for an entire day sampling everything from culture and heritage through to fantastic food and live music. But this re-invented factory isn't the only arts centre in Brum, The Drum, one of the UK's biggest African, Asian and Caribbean arts centres, and the Midlands Arts Centre (mac), which boasts the outdoor Arena as well as cinema, creative courses and performance, also ride high on ...
... the West Midlands arts scene.
Music wise, Birmingham has everything on offer and the Symphony Hall is the jewel in the classical crown. Beyond the unremarkable façade lies a glittering auditorium and stunning acoustics, plus internationally renowned performances by the Symphony Orchestra directed by Sakari Oramo. The NEC plays host to big popular names that span the decades, such as Bob Dylan, AC/DC and Cliff Richard, plus there are all manner of theatre productions, exhibitions and sports events on the programme. For something a little more intimate check out what's on at The Glee Club, which showcases bespoke live music and comedy events, whilst huddled in the Jewellery Quarter is The Jam House, directed by none other than Jools Holland.
Regardless of what's on elsewhere in Birmingham, the clubbing scene offers an eclectic choice of venue and genre. From Indie at The Sunflower Lounge, house and big beats at Barracuda Bar, through to funky, chilled out DJ's at the Hare and Hounds. But, if you're looking for something a little different, The Rainbow is renowned for organising some of the most unique clubbing events in the region. This old Victorian boozer is home to an outside courtyard, which provides alfresco clubbing, plus a calendar of underground and up-and-coming artists alongside more established names.
