This is a article that is going to cover drilling equipment. The are many part to a drilling rig. I want to cover in this article is the top part of a drilling rig . There are far to many parts of a oil rig to cover, so I am just going to give a summary of the top of a drilling rig.drilling equipment I am going to write a few article's covering the drilling rig from top to bottom. The top being the crown block to the bottom being the Bore Hole.
The crown block is a piece of equipment that is located a the top of the rig. This is usually were a the country's flag is placed. The crown block is a piece of equipment that uses pulley to to hold the weight of all the pipe that is going down the bore hole. A pulley system is used to divert the massive amount of weight that the crown block has to hold. traveling block pulleywill be connected with a large diameter wire to a traveling block. This is all supported by a large metal mast. The steal mast is what looks like a antenna tower.

... the purpose of the traveling block is to use pulleys to support a massive amount of equipment weight that will be put down the bore hole. To give you an idea of the cost of a crown block, they are about $14,000 USD to approximate $80,000 USD. The weight that a traveling block can support will be from about 400,000 thousand pounds up to 900,000 pounds.This should give you and idea about the huge amount of equipment weight that goes down a drilling rigs bore. Of course this is for the land drilling rigs.
The traveling block in then conjoined to a top dive. There are 2 different types a land rig a a rotary table/kelly and a Top Drive. The Top drive drilling rig is one that uses a power swivel or top drive in order to do the drilling. A rotary table or Kelly does the same thing but is located on the rigs main plat form. The Top drive will be used by the traveling block. The top drive land rig is more pricey but is considered to be a more efficient land rig , taking less man power to operate.
