I have used article marketing, and free content in general, to generate tens of thousands of subscribers, in tons of different niches, and I've cultivated a continuous conversation with those readers over weeks, months and even years thereafter... to turn many of them into clients and customers.
No one can take away my "list". Your list isn't subject to any search engine penalties, any algorithm changes, any "slaps", any judgements by any outside agencies, or really... any natural atrophy that comes with content that lives on the web at all.
As a matter of fact, after a period of time, all search results are re-shuffled for recency and relevance, so stuff that's been generating traffic for you for YEARS, may come out of the results overnight, leaving you stuck and in deep trouble if you are relying on it for your income.
