Are Online Arcades Safe For Your Daughter?

There is a lot of talk about online arcades today. These are amazing little websites which offer the fun of video games in a free setting. These arcades don't just cater to the bored adults of the world. In fact, there are several arcades being launched which are actually dedicated to girls. These arcades offer some of the old classics along with new games that advances playing with dolls to a whole new age. Dress up games and make up games work right alongside coloring books to even offer things to girly girls.

Unfortunately, I'm sure your parental instinct is blaring loudly. Are these arcades safe?
This is another issue where I can't make a blanket statement. All I can say is that you'll need to look at each individual arcade and decide for yourself. There are a few things to really consider. The first would be whether the website offers multiplayer games. This would involve them playing something against another person, which usually offers a chat feature for communication during it. If you don't want them talking to strangers online then you will have to make such a section off limits or ban the whole site. ...
... The other things you'll want to look for is whether they really look for information. Again, this is mostly harmless. Most arcades won't ask for anything. Only a few arcades ask for email addresses and this is usually just so they may update you about new features. If you want to be really safe then you can almost always refuse to give your information and not use a site that requires it.

I have always looked at this situation as a good way to teach them about the Internet. It may be a parent's nightmare at times but it is not going away. Showing them an online arcade is a good way to introduce them to the online world in a safe manner. You can tie in lessons about not sharing your information with people over the Internet. You don't hand out your email address and you always protect your name and location. It may be a shocking lesson, but clicking the bouncing monkey won't actually give you a PS3. These are the basic rules of Internet use. You need to use your common sense to safely surf.

I will be the first person who'll state that there are dangers for children on the Internet. They obviously shouldn't be granted free reign at a young age. Internet usage should be monitored and limited. You may want to find a few safe arcades and limit them to those. You can teach them that they can only visit links that you've bookmarked. This should offer a good mix of freedom and security that will get their feet wet while ensuring that they surf safe.

There is nothing inherently wrong with most arcades sites. If you are willing to take the few minutes you need to ensure their safety, you will find that it is perfectly safe to include a good arcade site with their regular play.
