Less than a century ago, psychotherapy—the method of alleviating physical and emotional pain through talking—was a revolutionary idea. Today, thanks to media's constant depiction of doctors in white coats, jotting down notes about patients on couches telling their story, psychotherapy has become a fixture of popular culture. What exactly is psychotherapy and how is it used to treat mental patients?

Psychotherapy is a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or any mental health specialist. During the treatment, an Indianapolis mental health patient will learn more about his condition, moods, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It will teach them to respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills and regain control of their life.

There are many types of psychotherapy; each differs in intensity and duration. Three most common classifications are pharmacological, group, and individual. Different types of individual therapy include cognitive, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, ...
... and psychoanalytical. The cliché of the psychologist with his patient on a couch falls under the individual type of psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy can be helpful in treating mental health problems including addictions and disorders (anxiety, eating, mood, personality, and psychotic, among others). It's important to note however, that not everyone who receives the treatment is diagnosed with a mental illness. Psychotherapy can help people cope with life's everyday stresses and conflicts.

To be specific, psychotherapy can help you resolve conflicts, relieve stress or anxiety, sleep better, learn to manage unhealthy reactions, come to terms with a serious health problem, and even recover from abuse. In some cases, it can even be as effective as medications such as antidepressants. With that in mind, psychotherapy alone may not be enough to alleviate the symptoms of a mental condition. Medications or other treatments may be necessary depending on the situation.

There are many counseling centers that offer psychotherapy and marriage counseling in Indianapolis. If you're having trouble coping with any problems you may have, visiting any of these centers and taking time to talk to one of their counselors is the right step toward getting the help you need.
