Vitrified tiles are produced through a process of vitrification, or transforming substance to glass. These tiles are known for their low porosity, which makes them strong and resistant to stains. The products are often an alternative to granite or marble floors.

This kind of tile is made by baking of fine materials, such as silica and clay, at high temperatures. Individual particles or grains are made to melt from the heat and fuse to create a surface that is vitreous. The resulting creations are always single mass, extremely hard and low in porosity. Because these are manufactured products, they do not always have natural patterns and textures that would be available with granite or marble materials.

There are four main types: soluble salt, glazed, full body and double charge. Soluble salt versions are polished and have been screen-printed. Glazed versions, also known as GVT, feature a surface that has been glazed. They are available in a range of designs. Furthermore, the textures of the surface may be stone, slate, bamboo or wood grain. This is considered an expensive process, but as digital printing techniques ...
... advance, the cost begins to drop.

Double charge kinds are taken through a press that prints a pattern using a double layer of pigment. These are generally three to four millimeters thicker than the other types. The process does not allow for patterns that are complex, but the results are always durable and best suited for high-traffic projects. Similarly, full body are good for high traffic. These have pigment in throughout their thickness and so scratches and chips are less noticeable.

Vitrified pieces are much like ceramic. However, there are some differences between the two. Clay that is used to make vitrified styles is mixed with feldspare and quartz prior to being hardened. These extra components are what give the units the glass feature.

These units can be used in many of the same places that ceramics are, such as flooring and countertops. Because they have a low absorption rate, they also do well in outdoor environments. They are nearly frost proof, which is especially beneficial in areas where the climate can get really cold. Prices of the units are known to range based on many factors. Often vitrified kinds are more costly because of their added qualities. They also require an adhesive that is extremely strong and so installation services may be more expensive as well.

Very rarely are these tiles glazed. This is the opposite of ceramic kinds, which often feature some kind of glazing component. Instead, a dye is mixed with the clay prior to it being hardened. This dye makes it take on a certain color, so even if the tile is scratched, the color will remain. These may be polished or unpolished. The former tend to have a bright sheen and the latter are more natural and rough in appearance.

Vitrification is a process used when manufacturing vitrified tiles, which are low porosity and strong. These are used as an alternative to marble and granite flooring. These can be installed indoors or outdoors, and are well liked for their durability. There are numerous choices when it comes to this flooring.
