Knowing The Admission Requirements For International Students
A lot of foreign students dream of studying in the United States. They have their reasons but the biggest attraction is the quality of education. Young people feel that the United States offer dynamism and advanced pedagogy that they may not able to get if they stay in their home country. Also, they feel that getting educated in America gives them a distinct advantage when hunting for jobs back home. An additional reason for foreign students wanting to go and study in the US is the fact they can pass on their acquired knowledge to their countrymen.
If you are seeking to apply to study in the United States, there are certain guidelines and rules one must follow. Government and institutional rules are in place as part of the admission requirements for international students like you.
Generally, a foreign student needs to acquire a student visa before entering the United States. It could be a non-immigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent stay. The course and the school where you wish to study will determine the type of visa you will be getting. An international student may need to have an ...
... F-1 or an M-1 visa.
Steven Loften the founder and CEO of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in an interview said that foreign students with strong extracurricular activities have better chances to enter US colleges and universities. Scores obtained in a standardized test such as the SAT also matter unless your high school has an internationally recognized curriculum. The reason behind this is that US colleges and universities may have a hard time interpreting your transcript. In this case, the only way to figure out your aptitude and competency to enter post-secondary institutions is through SATs and other tests.
Colleges may also require students to take the Teaching of English as a Second Language of TOEFL or the International English Language Testing System of IELTS to prove that you are proficient to communicate in English which is a no-brainer. The amount of English that you know will determine how far will go as a student since most lessons and classes are conducted in the English language.
International students need to realize that big name colleges and universities have quotas and limits as far as admission rates are concerned. Michele Hernandez, president and founder of ApplicationBootCamp.com said that international students need to focus on lesser known colleges and universities to improve their chances of getting an education.
International students need to know the individual admission requirements of each college and universities that they intend to study into. Stacey Kostell, director of admissions at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign said that unlike other countries that the requirements are standardized, colleges and universities in America have varying admission requirements. It is important, said Kostell, to know the subtle differences.
All experts agree that students that complete a good program of study before going to the States increases the likelihood of admissions. As long as you are able to comply with the particulars and showing that you are proficient in English, you can get into a college in the States in a breeze.
