‘Dividing the Estate' is the story of how the terrifying state of the Gordons' huge fortune came about and how death brings their bickering about the estate to a climax. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote comes to Broadway with his play, described in press notes as a 13-character human comedy about a family that must confront its past as it prepares for its future.

The Plot

‘Dividing the Estate' is set in the year 1987, a devastating time for the U.S. economy. There was a major stock market drop due to the oil price plummeting. The story is about a family in Texas, led by family matriarch Stella Gordon (Elizabeth Ashley). All her children are without regular jobs and they all receive a monthly allowance from the family estate. Stella's oldest daughter Lucille (Penny Fuller) and son Lewis (Gerald McRaney) live with her in their ancestral home. Stella's other daughter Mary Jo (Hallie Foote) lives in Houston with her husband Bob (James DeMarse) and teenage daughters Emily (Jenny Dare Paulin) and Sissie (Nicole Lowrence). Lucille's son, who is affectionately known as Son (Devon Abner) manages ...
... the estate. He had to leave his college due to his father's death. Lewis is tired of asking for money from his nephew Son in order to free himself from a personal financial crisis. He is actually having an affair with a girl (Virginia Kull) much younger to him who is working at a nearby fast-food restaurant and this girl's father is now blackmailing him. Son is tired of Lewis' gambling and drinking problem and he is in the hope for a raise so that he can marry a schoolteacher Pauline (Maggie Lacey).

Initially, ‘Dividing the Estate' is slow and light on plot, but as the pieces start fitting together, the stage comes alive with exceptional comical situations. The plot thickens when Mary Jo and her family who are in a financial crisis, visit Stella to persuade her to terminate the monthly allowance system and instead divide the family estate among her three children while she is still alive. Since the economy is facing severe recession with the poor prices and high taxes if the estate is divided then the value of their inheritance would seriously drop. The decision could actually backfire on them and it may have adverse effect on the lives of their housemaid Mildred (Lynda Gravatt), her daughter Cathleen (Kelana Richard) and the 92-year old Doug (Arthur French) family retainer for years.

The Credits

The play is directed by Michael Wilson and the comfortable and tasteful set is designed by Jeff Cowie. The typical 80's style costumes are designed by David C. Woolard. Lights are done by Rui Rita and the sound is perfected by John Gromada.
