Advice For Your Hong Kong Shopping Trip

If you're planning a fun trip to Hong Kong, you're probably planning to take in a bit of shopping. After all, the city is a shopping mecca, known as much for its great bargains and fashion as it is for the many excellent Hong Kong restaurants. Still, it's easy to get carried away, especially when you're from out of town. Here are some tips for follow as you embark on a fun day of Hong Kong shopping.
1. Try to Bargain
In Hong Kong, prices are often more of a suggestion than a fixed price so try to negotiate at least 30% of the listed price at small shops and markets. Start with a low price, and make sure you know what you are buying. Assume the seller is lying about everything and use your common sense, and try to walk away technique if you have reached a deadlock. Don't walk around in flashy clothing that screams tourist and don't try to bargain in chain stores and major stores.
2. Compare Prices
Check the price of what you plan to buy in your home country first, or check out large department stores and reputable dealers in the city before you buy.
3. Know What You're Buying
Know exactly ...
... what you want to buy and look around in your home country first and at the reputable stores in Hong Kong to get honest advice. Hong Kong shopping is overseen by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, which has a Quality Control Scheme that vets shops on price, honesty and many other attributes. While you won't get a great deal at these shops, you can trust them more.
4. Hit Up the Sales
Hong Kong shopping sales are usually advertised around town, and there are a few dedicated seasonal sales in the area. The main shopping season is late December through February in preparation for the Chinese New Year. You'll see sales mostly in the malls as designer stores and small stores usually won't get involved. You can also try hitting the sale season of July through August which is complimented with the Hong Kong Tourism Board festival.
5. Avoid the Bait and Switch and Scams
Hong Kong really has an undeserved reputation for using bait and switch scams, in which you think you are buying one thing but an inferior product is actually placed in the box. Keep an eye out for this, and remember that there are plenty of illegal and bootleg items on the streets.
Once you're done shopping, don't forget about the many other things to do in Hong Kong. Take in a few of the best restaurants in Hong Kong to try traditional dim sum, take a trip to Victoria Peak for the best views and learn what really makes this city unlike any other.
