You thought getting and staying pregnant was something that occupied your mind a lot; wait until some of the major decisions regarding pregnancy pop up. One of the first major decisions after choosing your healthcare provider is where to give birth. You will be lucky if your insurance and provider offer you choices. Explore the choices for birth they offer, or allow your birth choice to decide your healthcare provider. There is no a whole lot you can do typically about your healthcare coverage, but if you are given choices before pregnancy, explore what birth options they cover before choosing an insurance plan. On to the birth choices that are the most common choices facing many pregnant women and their spouses/partners.

If you have chosen to use a obstetrician for your healthcare provider during your pregnancy you have chosen a medical professional that is associated with one or several hospitals. If you have a high-risk or complicated pregnancy you will more than likely be using an obstetrician. Women with normal, healthy pregnancies also make the choice to use the doctor - gynecologist who has been caring for her ...
... female needs who is also a obstetrician to continue caring for her pregnancy needs. Typically the birthing options with obstetricians are centered on the hospital setting or a birthing center associated with a hospital.

Family practitioners are physicians who can train in various fields of medicine that center on the various family members in the practice, which may include obstetrics. Birthing options are also centered on the hospital setting or possibly a birthing center associated with a hospital.

Midwives are becoming more popular and are health care providers, which can have a wide range of training; some can be associated with hospitals. Certified nurse-midwives receive a nursing degree plus additional training in the art of midwifery. If a certified professional midwife, they have extensive training in midwifery, without the nursing degree. Midwives typically offer flexible birthing choices with an emphasize on minimal medical intervention unless necessary for the health of the baby or mom. They specialize in low-risk pregnancies and rarely except high-risk pregnancies. Typically you can have a wide choice of birthing options including to have home birth, birthing center or hospital setting for your birth.

Home births are nothing new and have been the focus of many a healthy birth for centuries. Women feel more comfortable at home in the environment that is nurturing and out of the public eye. Women and couples who chose this birthing method should be well educated on the birthing process and chose the doctor or midwife carefully for the delivery.

The hospital is the birth setting of the majority of women in the modern world especially those who are high-risk, or who are experiencing multiples or complicated pregnancies. Most insurance policies regarding deliveries are specific to the setting in which they will cover the charges for delivery so the hospital setting for most insured is the popular choice. More and more insurance companies are being more liberal to include birthing centers.

Birthing centers are using free standing but can be associated with a hospital. Most birthing centers are midwifery in nature but there are some that have doctors on staff. There are typically fewer restriction and guidelines regarding birthing and are normally less invasive and more "natural". Centers are not for high-risk pregnancies generally.

When making your birthing choices, discuss all aspects of your pregnancy and birth desires with the individual who will be delivering your baby. Take interviewing both the healthcare provider and the birth setting seriously and be aware that as your pregnancy continues your birthing choice might need to change if you go from low-risk pregnancy to high-risk pregnancy for your safety and the safety of your baby. Your birthing choice is a major decision in your pregnancy and one that women make in all sorts of ways depending on their special circumstances. Some women birth in traditional birthing settings because that is the way of their family or culture and others make the choice based on insurance options. Others have a desire for a certain type of birth (water, natural, c-section) and the type of birth will dictate the birthing setting. Every pregnancy is different and a woman who previously had a traditional hospital birth for her first-born may opt for a home-birth or a birthing center birth assisted by a midwife for her second child. Unfortunately there are also incidents where there is an emergency and the choice made previously by the woman is discarded for the safety of her baby and herself.
