Article marketing has changed over the past couple of years. In the early days of article marketing, you could write up an article, submit it to 10 article directories, and expect a FLOOD of brand new traffic to your site overnight. But nowadays, this tactic doesn't produce the same results.

Many authors have quit article marketing altogether, and have gone on to do other marketing techniques that could possibly restore their traffic. Well, people like this were flawed from the start.
Authors like this were using articles and article directories as their main source of generating traffic online - and this is something that you should never do. Never rely on 1 source of traffic when it comes to marketing online. It's like a cardinal sin of internet marketing; because at any moment a technique can become ineffective for you.

Nevertheless, you can still do great things in your business with article marketing. You can still build your brand, get traffic, get subscribers, and be perceived as an expert in your niche. But it has to be a niche. Don't write articles in all kinds of categories online... stick to one niche so that people can see that you're the real deal in your marketplace.
I made the mistake of writing articles in all kinds of different niches. I got sales, but I didn't have a backend income - and this is where 80% of your total business profits will come from. So I would write articles, submit them to the article directories, and I would get sales... but I would have to lower my price to $7 - because I didn't build a list, and I didn't maximize my customer value when they landed on my site.
It's just not a good idea to write in a wide variety of niches. Build yourself up in one niche, and continue to pump out articles in that niche for a long period of time (even forever). You'll gain a lot of fans by doing this, and you will gain 0 fans for doing the alternative.
Writing articles is easy, and it's something that you can per-fect and master in your spare time. Strive to write 1 article per day, then after about a month, scale it up to 3 articles per day - and even up to 5 articles per day. This is something that is totally doable, and I think you can profit immensely by doing so.
