There is always a first time for everything, and there's nothing more exciting than finally being of legal age to join the rest of the world's wine enthusiasts. Just like in any other thing, however, there are important factors you need to understand as a newbie in the world of wine. Not only will understanding these factors help you save time and money, but will also help you become the wine expert you have dreamed yourself of becoming.

Take it One Step at a Time

It's really tempting to fill your cellar with all the wine you can find when it's your first time, but while it may seem to be a good idea, it is not. It's all right to feel excited and all, but you need to take it slowly to enjoy the entire experience without throwing your money down the drain. You need to understand that your tastes will eventually change, so if you fill your cellar at once, you may end up with a cellar full of bottles that will never be opened.

Taste and Learn along the Way

What better way to learn more about wines than to taste as many wines as you can? You have all the time in the world to learn more about the different ...
... types of wine in the world, and if you want to become a wine expert someday, make sure you join as many tastings as you can. Be careful who you listen to, however, as not all who claim to be 'wine experts' actually are. Take people's advice and opinion with a pinch of salt and take time to learn the craft on your own by reading books, and hanging out with the right people.

Cheap Versus Expensive

Perhaps one of the most important things you need to understand as a newbie is that you cannot judge a wine by how much it costs. Expensive wine is good, but not all the time. In fact, there are a lot of low-priced wines out there that can taste just as good, if not better, than many pricey brands. You also need to understand that the quality of wine depends on many different factors, but most of the time, it depends on your tastes and personal preferences. A bottle of wine may taste good for a particular wine expert, but not for another. Finally, unless you are a real wine expert with high-trained taste buds, you won't really know the difference between cheap and expensive wine.

Befriend Your Supplier

Many times, excellent wine advice comes from people you least expect it to come from – the staff from your favourite wine store. People from small wine stores may seem to be only good at enticing you to buy from them, but many times, they actually know what they are talking about. Make friends with the the staff, the manager, or even the owner if that's possible and you will immediately have insider information every time you need to update your wine cellar at home.

Know Where the Best Wine Sources Are

If you want to get the most of your wine experience, it's crucial that you know where to find the best wines. Wine lovers of this generation are a lot more fortunate because with just the click of a button, they can readily know where the best sources of wines are. The internet is no doubt one place you can get good wine for less. If you know of small, family-run vineyards in your area, put them on top of your list, too, as wines from such sources are usually of high-quality and yet sold at a much lesser price.
