Avignon Attractions Worth Checking Out

A commune located in the southeastern part of France, Avignon is visited by tourists for its well-preserved ramparts and wonderful sceneries, which are often consists of medieval buildings and magnificent architectures. Some of the Avignon hotels themselves are already an awesome sight, with their well-designed exteriors and lavish interiors. Pont St-Bénézet

Built way back in the 1100s, this medieval bridge is famous not only among locals but among tourists as well. It exudes a sense of mystery that keeps tourists from all over the world coming to see its unique attractiveness. Much of the bridge's structure had been swept away by a catastrophic flood that happened in the 1600s and only four arches are intact up to this day.

Collection Lambert

For lovers of art, Collection Lambert is a good place to visit when in Avignon. This museum of contemporary art was opened only in June 2000, but some of the artworks displayed and included in its galleries date back to the 1960s, although artworks done by newer artists are also showcased. The artworks displayed in this gallery are collections of Yvon Lambert, a collector and gallerist.

Fort Saint-Andre

Avignon is also known for its castles that stand grand and majestic against wonderful backdrops. One of these castles is Fort Saint-Andre, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle was originally built to show the supremacy of the Kingdom of France. Standing atop a rocky outcrop at Mount Andaon, this castle was designed by architect Jean du Luvre. Tourists who want to see the interiors of this castle may have to pay a fee.

Palais Des Papas

Located near Fort Saint-Andre, the Palais Des Papas is a massive Gothic structure that is considered to be one of the most important buildings in entire Europe. This building was once the residence of popes and anti-popes in the 14th century and had witnessed several historical events. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
