Crowns are ideal for cosmetic restoration. They can be used to rebuild a tooth that is worn down, cover discolored teeth, tooth modification and can even be placed over dental implants. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) and ceramic crowns are popular in restorative dentistry today. Although the age-old metal crowns are still used, they are typically used on back teeth due to their obvious metal appearance. Both PFMs and ceramic crowns can be color matched to existing teeth for a smooth and natural looking smile. PFMs are fairly durable but sometimes tend to be prone to breaking and chipping.

Historically, ceramic crowns were not as strong as PFMs or metal crowns. However, with advances in technology, today's ceramic crowns offer great strength as well as excellent aesthetics. Not only are ceramic crowns ideal for front teeth, they work well for back teeth. With a skilled dental lab technician in a Provo Utah Family Dentist office or Utah family dentist office, good oral hygiene and proper placement, ceramic crowns can last for years. With ceramic crowns, you can have the confidence to smile again. Without a doubt, ceramic ...

Preparing the Tooth for a Crown

If you need a crown, you may also need a root canal if the tooth has a lot of decay. After a root canal, a post and core foundation is place in the gum. For placement of the crown, the dentist needs to file down the tooth to make room for the crown. Once the tooth is filed down, patients receive a temporary crown until the permanent crown is fabricated. Most crowns just require only two visits to the dental office.

The traditional way of making a crown is for the dentist to take a mouth impression using a rubber-like substance. Typically, the substance sets in approximately five minutes. An impression is also taken of the teeth below and above the tooth being crowned. This ensures that the crown will fit properly with your natural bite. Impressions are sent to a dental lab for fabrication. Even though your temporary crown is made of plastic, it will be secured with temporary cement. A special cement is used so that the temporary crown can be removed easily when it's time to place the permanent crown.

Usually, the temporary crown is removed on the second visit, and the permanent one is tested out for proper fit. At times, the permanent crown may require minor adjustments, more glazing or polishing. When the permanent crown is just right, it is permanently cemented on to the tooth.

Today, there are many modern dental offices that have a CAD-CAM unit or a Cerac where a crown can be created in just one day. A 3D image of the prepared tooth is fed into one of these devices. Then, a computer actually fabricates the crown from a piece of porcelain. Patients can leave with a permanent crown with just one visit. With advances in technology, the world of dentistry is contantly evolving.
