In a survey it was found that of the people who had the highest life expectancy, people from Monaco, Japan and Macau ranked very high - but surprisingly the survey found that the Seventh-day Adventists in the US also figured very high on the list of people who lived the longest. In fact they live longer than any other community on earth.

It was further revealed that the unique dietary habits that the Adventists follow rigidly, combined with other health habits, has seen them win the battle against disease and mortality with such success.

It would be right to say that a great deal of the improved life expectancy is owing to advances in medical care but it will wrong to assume that the Adventists live long because of improved health care - it is their healthy lifestyle which they have inculcated into their religion, that makes it so.

It will be worth our while to observe the people from this denomination and see how and what they eat, what is their daily routine and how they deal with stress and see if we can inculcate it into our lives and slow down our aging process as well. Remember that the age expectancy ...
... for an average American is 79 years or thereabouts, but the Adventist live for at least a decade more - which translates into three new American Presidential terms, three more Olympics and World Championships to enjoy and attending the weddings of even your youngest grandchildren.

The Americans have a simple philosophy - your body is a loan from God and you have to return it to Him in pristine and unspoiled condition. You have no right to defile or sully it anyway, because it does not belong to you. Which means no tobacco, no nicotine, alcohol abuse is out and meat is a strict no-no. Can you contemplate a life without burgers? They do and restrict their diet to vegetarian food that is full of vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts. It is thought that the healthy oats were discovered by an Adventist and their preference for peanut butter over the fat laden dairy product is too well known to merit repetition here. Furthermore, the community also decries rich foods, certain spices and prohibits the consumption of caffeine, which means that beverages like tea, coffee and coca cola are also not part of their diet.

Add to this a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, a lot of sunshine, a focus on family, community and above all a daily communion with God and you have the perfect recipe for longevity and an illness-free life.

The biggest concentration of Seventh-day Adventists in America is in Loma Linda, California. Their presence and their rigid inflexibility to deflect from their eating habits is reflected in the framework of the beautiful town. Its largest grocery does not sell meat, smoking is prohibited in the town and fast food restaurants are not the familiar sight as elsewhere in the country.

From the Seventh-day Adventists one message is loud and clear - a long and healthy life is not an accident and your habits contribute a lot to it. It is something that you do not need health and fitness articles or Medical Advice and News to teach you. Their lifestyle is an interesting amalgamation of fellowship with community, a healthy lifestyle, a regimented diet, a positive outlook, austere living, stress-coping practices and above all spirituality. If we, in a country whose obese population is rather unseemly, adopt these behavioral changes it will makes us healthier, fitter and add years to our lives.
