Preparing For Inset Training
Most teachers in the United Kingdom are required to take an INSET training to update their knowledge regarding the disciplines they teach. Biology teachers need to find out about the recent discoveries in anatomy, zoology, genetics, and other related fields, mathematicians and physicists need to learn more about the emerging technologies, and so on.
Of course, teachers should maintain their Continuing Professional Development or CPD for teachers themselves, without having to participate in some courses organised by the state, but few of them actually do that. Therefore, it is better for teachers to gather and learn more about today’s discoveries from a specialised trainer, and even from other teachers.
The best part of an INSET training day is that you get the chance to meet with teachers that teach the same discipline as you. And when various ideas meet, progress happens. Why rely only on specialised magazines and books to discover new things, when you can discuss punctual matters with people that speak the same language as you and teach the same discipline?
Courses included in the CPD for teachers system ...
... are usually held at the beginning or end of teachers’ school holidays, in order not to disturb their regular teaching programme. However, this is not a rule, because each school has the possibility of scheduling the INSET days (there are five INSET days in total) when the teachers want.
Usually, these events take place at a school, and teachers are not required to travel too much to the meeting point. INSET courses cannot take place online; they require physical presence.
The next thing that has to be considered by teachers preparing for some IN-SErvice Training courses is to take a notebook and pens with them. An electronic means would help too, such as a laptop or tablet computer. Teachers need to understand that during training days, they are students all over again, and have to act accordingly, meaning to take sheets of blank paper, pens and pencils with them, just like an actual student.
Finally, they have to show interest in what the rest of the teachers and trainer discuss. It would be preferable to read about the novelties in their field and prepare some questions too. And if they really want to get noticed, they should prepare a presentation about one or more of the most significant developments in their discipline. This way, they will help the rest of the teachers learn more about the topic and impress the trainer.
There are several companies in the UK offering training for teachers, including CPD for teachers who offer both scheduled courses and INSET training?
