Dating back years ago, the early inhabitants cover their houses with grass, skin animals or woven mats. But when people discovered how to spin wool and cotton, woven mats were substituted from the ancient floor covers they use. Egyptians are known to be one of the firsts to weave and sew colourful cloths and use them for their floors.

Carpet is an Old Italian word ‘carpita,’ ‘carpire’ which means to pluck. The first noted carpets were woven and made by nomads. From these ancient stories, weaving of carpets advanced to the highest design in countries like India, Iran, Turkey and China. They use linen, hemp and cotton as the base or foundation and for the luxurious and stylish pile, they use silk and wool.

Carpets are mainly composed of pile yarns that are dyed; sewn yarns which are the first backing; the strength of the carpet is the second backing; adhesive that puts together the first and second backings; and an underneath cushion for the softer and luxurious experience.

Listed below are the different carpet types:
Needle felt – these are carpets that are advanced technologically. These ...
... are made by combining and felting fibers that are synthetically made. They use forked and barbed needles producing a very durable carpet.
Woven – these are carpets made on a loom the same procedure used in weaving fabrics. The pile used here are elegant or ‘berber.’ The plush or elegant carpet is called a ‘cut pile’. The ‘Berber’ carpet is known as the ‘loop pile. When the two are combined, it is called ‘cut and loop’ carpet. These are the most expensive carpets mainly because of the slow process of manufacturing.
Knotted – these are carpets that are also known as the ‘supplementary weft cut-loop pile’ carpet. The grain of threads called ‘structural weft’ interchange with an additional ‘weft’ which advances to the right angles and into the weave surface.
Tufted – these are carpets wherein the ‘pile’ is infused into the backing fabric, and then it is glued to a woven hessian as the next backing material to give strength and firmness. This is the most practiced method of producing carpets in the world.
Embroidery – these are not those typical carpets. These carpets are not loom made. They are produced using an application of pattern of stitches to a base cloth.

Types of Yarns and Fabrics Used in Carpets:
Nylon – the most common and ordinary fabric in carpeting because of its excellent wear characteristics;
Polypropylene – inexpensive carpet material and is also not easy to dye;
Wool and Wool-Blends – easy to dye, durable and plentiful;
Polyester – good properties physically and are resistant to stains; and
Acrylic – a synthetic material that is washable, colourfast and a bit difficult to dye.

Steps in the production and manufacturing of carpets are as follows:
Preparation of the Yarns
Dyeing of Yarns
Tufting or Clustering the Yarn
Dyeing the Carpet that has been Tufted
Carpet Finishing
Quality Check and Control

Carpets of today come in different materials and designs. Some are stylish, elegant and luxurious. Others are just ordinary and simple. Whichever carpet you choose for your home or for your business, it is always best to choose according to what you need. Carpets, after all are like decorations that add to the beauty of one’s home, offices and business establishments.
