Podiatry is a branch of medical science that has experienced a huge growth over the last fifty years. However, there are still so many confusions as well as misunderstanding regarding the podiatric treatment procedure. Modern podiatry is no longer a trade simply deals with the treatment of toenails, corns, and calluses. This has become most advanced medical study with the most expertise in foot as well as ankle medicine and surgery.

Following are the common myths about the podiatric treatment:

Podiatry is only a two year school study: There is a misconception about podiatry: the podiatrists only attend to school for two years. Once the graduation is completed from the four year undergraduate university the podiatrist needs to attend the school just as long as a Medical Doctor (MD), or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) do. This is a fact that the first two years of the study in the podiatry school is much more important to the overall degrees.

From the third year the students need to study different foot and ankle conditions. In the fourth year they spend most of the time in working at hospitals handling real patients. ...
... Once the graduation is competed the podiatrists become hospital-based physician for two or three years where they learn different advanced medical and surgical conditions. After that they can enter into the world of private practice.

You can only consult a podiatrist for nail and calluses disorders: There was a time when the podiatrists (ordinary foot doctors) mainly treated nails, calluses, and simple foot pain. However, in the modern podiatric science more complex issues are being resolved by the expert podiatrists. For the last fifty years the podiatric specialists have treated all types of conditions that could affect foot and ankles such as bunions, hammertoes, serious foot and ankle fractures, ingrown toenails, and even severe birth deformities. Not only that the modern technology allows them to treat conditions like foot skin infections, bone disorders, nerve disorders, and circulation disorders.

Podiatrists are not surgeons: This is one of the most common misconceptions about podiatry. However, the reality is that there are so many acute foot and ankle disorders that cannot be cured without surgery. It is a fact that podiatrists are good at surgery too. Podiatrists use traditional orthopedic surgical techniques to modern surgical knowledge. They have save lives of many patients with aggressive surgical intervention in diabetic foot infections. You may find so many podiatrists who perform regular hospital or center based surgery.

Podiatrists refer expensive shoe wearing in every case: There some foot problems that demands the patient to wear special shoes so that the patient can rid of the problem. Actually our foot has a unique structural, psychological, and engineering relationship with the ground platform. In some of the extreme foot conditions the patients need to fulfill this relationship. This is the reason the doctors refer them special shoe wearing. This type of treatment is called as orthotic and orthotic treatment has developed a lot in the last fifty years. However, orthotics is a part of podiatry and not the essential thing to use for each case.

Bone doctors are better than the podiatrists: Orthopedic doctors share some common knowledge and treat many of the common conditions the involve foot and ankle. However, they are never trained and skilled in ankle and foot surgery and medicine. Only a trained podiatrist can analysis and treat foot conditions of extreme cases. Unlike the orthopedic doctors they have more in-depth training in foot and ankle conditions.

The study of the common misconceptions is always useful as they will lead any patient seeking expert care of the foot and ankle.
