It is generally perceived that quality tailored suits come from either Great Britain or Italy. So who does really make the best suits? Well, the truth is, they both do. You see some people will only wear a suit made in the UK while others find British suits and fabrics too stiff and prefer a light weight Italian tailored suit.

At Suit Row, we take a slightly different approach. We believe that you should own both British and Italian tailored suits and here is the reason why. Both styles of suits have a purpose in all mens wardrobes and this is why you should own both.

English tailored suits tend to have a much more structured shape to them and the fabric used also tends to be a little heavier being around 12 oz worsted wool, usually woven in Yorkshire, England. They also have a narrower shape to them dating back to the 1940's when British tailoring started to really become popular. A British made tailored suit would usually be single breasted with a notch lapel and would be in dark navy or grey. These types of suits are a staple in your collection and make great for formal events and business encounters. But not ...
... all British suits are heavy. Many cloth merchants in Britain now have a full range of super light weight wools, so if you like a more structured feel but require something light, try a 8oz super 150, woven in Britain.

The key characteristics of Italian tailored suits are their light weight and comfortable feel. This is great for the warmer weather and combined with luxury wool & silk fabrics, you really do feel at ease in an Italian tailored suit. Some suit lovers feel that this is what lets Italian tailored suits down and that they feel you should be able to 'feel' your suit on. Whatever your taste, you should own both a British and Italian tailored suit in your wardrobe.

So which do we prefer at Suit Row? Well, we prefer both and we try to mix both style to create the 'ideal' tailored suit. How we achieve this is by taking the British cut and softening the cut of it. Keeping the structure is key but we may use softer shoulder padding for example. We can then introduce some Italian fabrics which will create a fuse between both British and Italian tailored suits. The other way we may do it is by using heavier British wools but cutting our jackets in a soft Italian look to make a great casual jacket for the cooler seasons with a relaxed look.

Let's be honest, both make wonderful tailored suits and yes, some people prefer a specific cut, but our argument for owning both is quite clear – Use your British Tailored suits for formal, use your Italian for more relaxed occasions.
