Quality Indicator Survey Process: Changes Are Coming Your Way
The Quality Indicator Survey Process (QIS) is a two-stage review process to quantify nursing home quality and to draw systematic comparisons between facilities. The first stage deals with preliminary investigations conducted through interviews of residents and staff, record reviews, and also analysis of the Minimum Data Set (MDS). The second stage is more comprehensive and surveyors investigate \"triggered issues and residents\" using what are known as \"critical elements protocols'. Stage I takes about two days in all facilities, the duration of stage II is directly related to the number of care areas identified in Stage I which requires a more in-depth review.
The Quality Indicator Survey Process provides a real-time snapshot of any facility's clinical care for quality improvement purposes. Nursing home providers are looking forward to the new QIS to be more consistent, accurate and focused. However, the data-driven approach of the new QIS needs to be understood to prepare for what\'s next. ...
... Preparing in advance greatly increases your chances of scoring well.
To take advantage of the QIS, a detailed exploration of how you can utilize the QIS tools, protocols and concepts in your ongoing quality assurance efforts is required. A practical approach in learning the effective techniques to develop continuous survey readiness of either the QIS or traditional survey would also be helpful.
The objective of the new Quality Indicator Survey Process is to comprehensively review more regulatory areas within the current survey resources and enhance documentation through automation.
