Many temples and churches especially in Asia and Europe have strict dress codes and wearing shorts will prohibit your ability to get in. Given the limited space allotted in backpacks you can only have a few different outfits. Laundry facilities may be difficult to find so you may not be able to wash your clothes regularly.

You should pack many pairs of quick drying underwear or travel underwear which is designed to be washed in standard sinks and dried overnight. You can get by for days with underwear you can wash clean in the sink even if you cannot wash all of your clothes. Some backpackers also bring travel-sized detergent with them so that when they come across washing facilities they can utilize them and save money.
