If you have not been living under a rock lately then you must have noticed two new offerings from Blackberry, the new Z10 and Q10 with its updated BB10 operating software. These two devices are the flagships of the brand.

These two devices are the flagships of the brand. With these two devices the company is hoping to maintain its grip on businesses that require the extra security that Blackberry has always provided in its enterprise solutions in mobile devices. Q10 Review

We start the review with the Q10 because it looks very much like the traditional Blackberry phones that we are used to. Its screen is a little larger, the track pad/ball is gone but the keyboard looks distinctively the same.

... a power button on the top of the phone. The screen is touchscreen that replaces the functionality of the track pad.

Display – on the Q10 is amazing and bests the iPhone 5 in pixel depth but seems a tad darker than the Samsung S3. It is a 3.1” screen with a Super AMOLED display offering a resolution of 720x720 pixels and a pixel density of 330ppi. Its picture is bright and crisp with great viewing angles and good sunlight legibility. Even though it is aimed at business users the square screen viewing of typical HD 16:9 ratio videos is somewhat off-putting.

Software features – included a fully updated operating system with lots of little tweaks that will improve performance and update its functionality to include the new social networking apps on the Blackberry App World. The wide sweeping changes include the ability to swipe the touchscreen to access various menus and parts of the software. This swiping is used in conjunction mainly with the HUB which is the new centre of the phone giving access to all communications in one single spot. This gives a great bird’s eye view of everything. Another great feature is a new search function, whereby you simply start typing on the home screen what you want to do and the phone starts offering options. For example typing “tweet” and a message and it will bring you to the twitter apps compose screen.

Keyboard – true to form the keyboard for this generation of Blackberry is spot on. If you are not used to touchscreen typing and want to stick with a QWERTY keyboard have no fear, they have stayed true to their form factor in this keyboard. The keys are still angled slightly to make typing with your thumbs pleasant and elicit fewer mistakes.

Camera – with its rear 8 MP and 2 MP forward facing cameras you will have enough standard options to satisfy average demands. It comes with 3 main settings: Still, Video and Timeshift. Each of these modes offers sub-settings with more options. Stills record standard photos. Video is HD enabled which is a big step up from previous models including both 1080 or 720p options. Timeshift records 11 still images in sequence and allows you to select the one you would prefer to keep.

The Q10 is a very capable Smartphone with many standard features that business users have come to expect in a phone. With the expansion of the Blackberry App World there is still hope that it can catch up to its counterparts Apple and Android in getting full functionality from it in the realm of apps.
