Backpacking travel by definition means you carry your belongings with you in a large backpack. This is a more independent and grassroots means of travel wherein the majority of your travel requires staying in dorm style hostels. Backpacking is great for anywhere in the world but is most commonly associated with Europe and Asia.

Camping

Another way to save money during backpacking travel is to bring a tent with you and camp. Some hostels have camp grounds which are rented at a much cheaper rate than the rooms but also give you access to the kitchen and bathrooms. Some campsites are located outside of the city you want to see and may not have good access to public transportation. Some large camping grounds do offer laundry facilities and an area for snacks as well as bathroom and shower areas. So if you are renting a car you may be able to drive outside of town and save money on lodging by camping out.

Things to Carry

Unlike someone traveling on business who will have a hotel room and full services to use you must carry everything you will require on your person during backpacker travel. Some ...
... hostels offer limited services like towels and you can buy some toiletries on the road but it is better to come prepared in case nothing is offered—especially if you are planning on staying in tents or going on long hikes. Always carry a towel and soap. Bring a clothes line so that you can dry your laundry.

Bring a padlock to secure your items in hostels and while traveling. Bring linens. Not many hostels will provide linens. A sarong is a nice investment because it is versatile and light. You can use it to cover dirty furniture or as a beach blanket or a wrap for modesty.

Are you planning on doing a trip where you will include backpacking to different countries? If the answer is yes, then you better make sure that you find yourself cheap backpacker travel insurance. Travel insurance is a must if you are planning on leaving the country. Without backpacker insurance you are not covered if you get sick or have an accident while you are away.

You can stay in inexpensive hostels or look up places to stay on websites like couchsurfing.com. When you are trying to do backpack travel you can read reviews about people who are also in the backpacking community and travel community and therefore open their home for days at a time to weary travelers.
