How To Fix Your Sticking Laptop Keys

Laptop keyboards are not made to last forever. They are prone to getting dusty and grungy, especially if you are like many millions of people and enjoy eating while working on your laptop.

They tend to get stuck often if you don’t clean and lubricate them on a regular basis. If your laptop keys are sticking, the good news is that you do not necessarily have to spend a ton of money replacing your keyboard. There are many ways to restore your laptop keyboard yourself, by following some of these steps.

First, you’ll need a small screwdriver, some cotton swabs or Q-tips, rubbing alcohol and a household cleaner.
You can use your small screwdriver to gently pop the sticky keys off of your keyboard. Be gentle here, as they will generally come right off with just a little bit of pressure.

You can clean the entire keyboard all at once, by removing all the keys, or do it one key at a time. If you do choose to remove all the keys, you’ll want to take a photo of your keyboard (or draw a picture of it) so that you remember which keys go where, once you’ve finished cleaning it and begin to replace the keys.

... next thing you’ll want to do is, using a cotton swab or Q-tip that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol, start cleaning the areas under the keys rubbing alcohol. Be sure to have plenty of swabs on hand, as you’ll want to replace them with a clean one as they get dirtier. Makes no sense to be cleaning your keyboard with a dirty swab, right?

Be sure not to have too much excess rubbing alcohol on your swab, as you don’t want to get your laptop wet. The idea is to simply have a damp swab that will pick up debris and dry quickly.

Next, you can use the cotton swabs and alcohol to rub the actual keys and their rubber components with cotton swabs and alcohol. You want to be sure to get all of the grease and residue off of the keys. Then, use your household cleaner. Spray the keys and let them sit for about five to ten minutes before rinsing them off thoroughly with hot water.

After rinsing, put the wet keys on a paper towel and allow them to dry completely.

Once your keys have dried, put them on a sheet of paper or a paper bat. Coat them lightly with a film lubricant and let them dry. The lubricant will keep them lose once replaced on your keyboard, but be careful not to over spray them, as you don’t want too much residue.

If you removed them as well as the keys, now is the time to replace all of the rubber components into the keyboard and then install your nice, clean laptop keys. Make sure that the wire is placed into the guide slot next to the key and apply firm and gentle pressure until the key snaps into place.

It’s recommended that you do this every few months or as needed. You should also keep a can of keyboard air cleaning on hand and blow the dust out of the keyboard every day before using. This is one of the most common causes of stuck keys and yet, one of the easiest to prevent!

If possible, try not to eat food or drink liquids while working on your computer. Spilled food and liquids can not only result in sticking laptop keys, they can do permanent damage to your laptop if food or drinks get inside it.
