Any copywriter who has been around for longer than five years or so will know that new copywriting business used to come from mail-shots, small ads and the dreaded 'cold calling'.
Today, where the accepted Internet marketing mantra is 'content is king', a freelance copywriter can market his or her website using the same skill-sets that their site is promoting - namely, website copywriting, news releases, article and blog writing. If you're relatively new to freelance copywriting - or you've only recently joined the Internet marketing world after a prolonged Rip Van Winkle period - it's important to understand the synergies that exist when using online copywriting methods. And so, if you know even the bare basics of copywriting you are in big demand and you just need to find where the "starving crowd" is that are hungry for what you got.
The stark lesson is - and it's lessons that come as a shock to so many who are new to freelance copywriting: copywriters need clients. This may sound over simplified (or complicated, depending on your work ethic) but the key to attracting copywriting clients is to simply write something, ...
... anything at all, about the subject just to attract the attention of prospective clients. In fact,
The magic of copywriting is simply this: make some very strong benefit statements before you tell the reader or audience what it is that will do all this for them. And as soon as you see your control losing its steam, the first thing you should do is simply add more value to your offer and maybe expand on the claim or benefit (so it's bigger and better than your competitor's). If you see sales dropping even more investigate what's going on in the market and just be vigilant on how your offer is being perceived and what the value of the proposition is to the prospective buyer.
In fact if you talk to any of the top copywriters (both online and off-line) they will all tell you that the way they became a top copywriter is by learning what works and what doesn't through rigorous and continuous testing. If you have a business where you sell products that are in demand and you have done well locally with the products, but you can't seem to sell them online, perhaps your copy is not what it should be. Many online marketing experts and gurus say that copywriting is the most important skill you need to learn to build a profitable online business.
