Demand For Metal Cutting Tools May Be Up

Metal cutting tools and other similar products can play a vital role in manufacturing facilities and, bearing this in mind, demand for the items may be high at present in the UK.

After all, figures produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have shown that UK industrial output rose more than expected in February this year, driven by a rebound in manufacturing.

Factory output during the month rose by 0.8 per cent compared with January, while overall industrial production went up by one per cent, helped by a surge in demand for heat and energy during the cold snap.

Responding to the ONS figures, Brian Hilliard from Societe Generale suggested they were a “pleasant surprise”, adding: “They lift a bit of the gloom from the releases in recent months, but we shouldn’t get carried away. The industrial production figures were flattered by the very cold weather and energy use. All in all, the figures don’t alter the basic outlook.”

Also reacting with caution, David Tinsley from BNP Paribas said: “The bottom line is that the level of industrial production in February is still roughly ...
... where it was in the fourth quarter of last year. So it is not as dramatic as the month-on-month increases would suggest.”

He noted that it is important to bear in mind that the data is “weather-impacted”, so the underlying growth may be closer to 0.2 per cent or 0.3 per cent. This, he claimed, is “no great shakes - but better than nothing”.
