Amrita Pritam was a Punjabi author and lyricist, considered as the first prominent Punjabi female poet, writer, and novelist, and the leading twentieth century author of the Punjabi language, who is similarly valued on both the sides of the India-Pakistan border. With a profession straddling over six decades, she produced more than hundred books, of poems, creative writing, biographies, essays, a collected works of Punjabi folk songs and an biography that were translated into numerous Indian and foreign languages.

Amrita Pritam is most remembered for her touching poem, Aj Aakhan Waris Shah, which is an expression of her grief over mass destruction during the partition of India. When the former British India was partitioned into the independent states of India and Pakistan in 1947, she migrated from Lahore, to India, though she remained equally popular in Pakistan all the way through her life. Known as the most significant voice for the women in Punjabi literature, in 1956, she became the first woman to win the Sahitya Academy Award for her magnum composition, a long poem, Sunehe. Later she received the Bharatiya Jnanpith, one of India's highest literary awards, in 1982 for Kagaz Te Canvas. The Padma Shri came her way in 1969 and finally, Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, in 2004.

Amrita Pritam lived the last forty years of her life with the renowned artist, Imroz. She died in her sleep on 31 October 2005 at the age of 86 in New Delhi, after a long illness, but such legends never die.
