Pipe fittings are used to fit all kinds of pipes which are mostly used in both residential and industrial plumbing systems. Although they are used to basically function as connectors, they also ensure that the seal is leakage proof and held tightly in place. This is one of its important functions especially when used in sewage system, chemical industry and marine, natural gas and petroleum applications. Irrespective of the industry in which the threaded fittings are being used, their basic functions are very much the same- to act as a juncture, joint-bend or as extension and fit over the threaded pipes. Pipe fittings are manufactured using a variety of materials, namely brass, steel, copper, rubber, nyglass and also PVC. The application on which these fittings will be used will determine the type of threaded fittings.

Brass has a special advantage over steel in terms of both, as a pipe or as a fitting material; it is stronger as well as cheaper than steel. Though, there are some variations of steel that are superior to brass when it comes to the quality, but the prices are too high to fit into a budget. And if some steel ...
... pipes or griffin filters do not fit into the budget, they still have to be given a coat of an anti-corrosive solution made of zinc, which further elevates the cost. In some industries, which use brass pipes and fittings, they are coated with nickel to keep them safe from the most common acidic reactions. Another fact is that brass conducts energy at a very efficient rate of 45-50%.

Brass comes into great use when used in applications in which gas or oil is transferred at high speed or under tremendous pressure; since brass gives high level of conductivity, has high strength and can handle pressure and extreme temperature changes. As such, the petroleum industry is greatly dependent on brass pipelines and fittings. As we know, crude oil is mostly found is desert regions that are bound by high temperatures that also fluctuate throughout the year. Given these circumstances the material used in creating an extensive and huge maze of pipelines, should be durable against these extreme conditions. And this is why brass is given the first preference as a choice of material, in most applications.

Brass is almost 10% more dense that most of the steel grades, a fact which holds great importance as the strength of a metal largely depends on its density. Also brass is more tensile, easy to handle, anti-corrosive and maintenance free to a great extent. On the contrary, steel fittings have to be regularly checked for corrosion and wear and tear. Steel is a very expensive material and this is because it is very difficult to deal with. On the other hand, brass is an easy to work with material which yields a high scrap value as well as it is very easy to recycle.

It’s important to use high quality pipes, griffin filters and fittings that match the desired specifications. Also, using the right kind of fittings results in an extension in the life span of the fitting itself and thus adds to its value in the long run.
