Many people think of sand art as something that kids do when they scribble in the sand or make a sandcastle at the beach during their holidays. However, it has actually evolved over time to become something a great deal more sophisticated that is enjoyed by artistically talented individuals of all ages. Amazing sculptures have been created out of sand that tell stories of the past or represent some flight of fancy by the artist. Castles and even whole cities, dragons and other animals and people of all shapes and sizes have been created out of sand by these artists.

However, sand and water alone is usually not the best mixture for such sophisticate designs. With all the work that goes into them, they need to be made of something that will last. To this end, they are often sprayed with an adhesive of some kind to keep them from falling apart as the water dries out. In addition, sometimes an additive is mixed in with the sand to help it stick together.

The best type of sand for sand art is actually somewhat dirty. If there is clay and silt mixed with it, these particles are excellent adhesives ...
... and so the creations will last much longer. However, days at the beach cannot be enjoyed by everyone. Not all people live within a short distance of any sandy beaches – and in winter the weather does not entice anyone outdoors.

This is where commercial sand art games can be enjoyed by all. These are designs and pictures that are made for children and they have sticky parts covered by smooth paper. The paper is gradually peeled off a section at a time and coloured sand is sprinkled over the area. The sand sticks to the adhesive and colours it. The next section can then be done and so on until the design is completely coloured in with sand.

These are just some of the kid’s art ideas that can be gleaned from the Internet or from a good artistic hobby book. Kids can actually make up their own designs and do a similar thing by painting each section with glue and then sprinkling sand or some other material over it before it dries.

Kids can get creative with a little prompting and use cut up petals and grass, small seeds saved from tomatoes or melons, dried red lentils or many other things that can be found in the home. They can even get some sand and dye it with food colouring.
