The technological challenges Nigeria is confronted with not only mars prospects of students but also reminds one of the backlogs in terms of technological progress. Here is a brief take on challenges that Nigeria is currently facing for implementing computer education in schools.

1. Infrastructural and associated challenges

The huge cost-structure allied to implementation of computer set ups in secondary schools is the first deterrent for promoting computer education in Nigeria. Over time, the cost for computer education in Nigeria has more than doubled its figures. IT training centers have, to some extent, implemented computer technology.

However, at the secondary level, computers for instructional design still spell a fair bit of investment. The high price of software that further deters the authorities from going in for nation-wide installation of computers across all secondary schools.

The overall scenario of the Nigerian economy has further prevented the government from investing in computer education in Nigeria. Add to this the additional costs allied to repair and maintenance of computers, ...
... and the reasons that justify why the government is still not prepared to introduce computer education across secondary schools, stands clear.

Nigerian education at the secondary level is further marred due to the insufficiency of funds for providing instructional material. There is also a shortage of trained staff to operate computer and instructional materials in Nigeria.

2. The inner story: Inefficient Staff?

Another huge impediment in the way of issuing computers in secondary classrooms in Nigeria is the peculiar resistance of teachers in the country to adapt to changes in the traditional modules of education.

A recent report reveals that a number of teachers in Nigerian schools believe that welcoming instructional materials and computer-oriented classrooms could put their utility and jobs at stake. In addition, teachers in Nigeria surprisingly believe that using computers in classrooms will lead to an increase in their responsibilities without bringing in extra compensation.

Another huge challenge that acts as a spoiler to implementation of computer education and establishment of core IT training centers is the lack of adequate infrastructure to back computer education. Nigerian schools still lack sufficient power supply, air conditioning and an apt environ conducive to computers. With a lack of proper power back up, computers will be prone to risk of damage.

Plausible solutions - An end note

Educators and experts suggest that the Nigerian government must wake up to computers being a need of the hour. Efforts to trains students to opt for computers as a higher career choice must be encouraged.

Finally, the authorities must also pass and implement laws to that provide for greater funding in technology education to pave the way for progress.
