Musharraf Arrested Under Case Of Bugti’s Extermination

Former Pakistan president Gen. Pervez Musharraf has been arrested for indulgence in killing of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006. Musharraf is already under house arrest and undergoing several trials in Pakistan. Pakistani government in world news report stated that Musharraf would continue to remain under detention at his splendid farmhouse outside Islamabad until further hearings. Bugti on 26th of August during a military crackdown ordered by then president and army chief Pervez Musharraf died inside a cave, which was later declared as a hideout. In international news, it was stated that Musharraf’s bail plea was rejected by anti-terrorism court in Quetta and arrest warrant was issued.



“Nawab Akbar Shahbaz Khan Bugti” was born in Barkhan, which is now a district of Balochistan on 12th July, 1927. Being from a rich and well educated family, he also had his early education from Aitchison College and received Higher Education from Oxford University. Bugti was also the chief of the Jamhoori Watan Party and an influential tribal chief who controlled the gas-rich district of Dera Bugti in Balochistan province. Bugti had led an armed campaign to press for local independence and a greater share of income from Balochistan's natural resources. As per global news, he was accused by the Pakistani government of being a warlord and running a well-organized militia. It was also stated in international news that Bugti was running Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which was a threat for the government of Pakistan. Declared as a national threat, in July 2006, at that time Pakistani president General Pervez Musharraf targeted him and bomb attacks by military in Bugti and Marri areas were increased.

On 26th of August, 2006, Nawab Akbar Bugti got killed in heavy bombing by Pakistan military at his camp. As his death was confirmed in world news, the media both in Pakistan and outside severely doomed the killing as it was the second biggest blunder after Benazir Bhutto’s execution. Suspecting any riots in the country, paramilitary forces were tightened and curfew was imposed in Quetta, capital of Balochistan. Later, after Musharraf term ended as president of Pakistan, investigation process got started. On 11th July, 2012 a Pakistani anti-terrorism court at Sibi in Balochistan district issued arrest warrants against Pervez Musharraf and several others people who were charged of involvement in the killing of Akbar Bugti in 2006.
