Since it’s launch in 2007 the iphone has changed the way that we use our mobile phones turning them from simple phones to portable computers with onboard cameras and video cameras too. The iPad technology now looks set to do the same for home computing, with users of Apples products and the other tablet PC’s on the market now using these portable, hand held devices in place of desk top or lap top computers. What really set the iPhone apart was the ease with which you could download and install apps (short for applications) that added to the functionality of the device, allowing it to become so much more than a phone. Soon users were scanning bar codes to check prices, finding local attractions and playing games against their friends all through the device; not to mention accessing the ubiquitous social networking site, Facebook. Unsurprisingly the fact that these mobile computers could be used for work wasn’t far from developers minds, and soon applications were developed to allow medics and other professionals to use iPads and phones as part of their work. There are a number of apps now available which allow users to virtually swipe a credit card and handle their payments online. One of the most likely markets for this new technology is the hospitality industry, where using intuitive tablet devices like the ipad to take payment and show the menu offers restrauteurs the opportunity to make the dining experience more enjoyable for customers. Can you imagine being served by a waiter with an iPad which could show you the menu, tapping on any item shows you more information; ingredients, allergy advice and even customer reviews. When the time came to pay at this Apple Restaurant, you just get your card virtually swiped by the same device and you are good to go! In Vancouver, the Opus Hotel is already switching from regular phones to iphones in all their rooms, and allowing guests to take the phones outside the hotel to use without costly international roaming charges (and of course make more profit for the hotel). It seems likely that as this touch screen technology becomes more widely accepted and regularly used that it will become the future of service; integrating the power of a personal computer and internet access into even the simplest of transactions.
