In this when both of the ends are grounded, a current circulates from the armour to the ground and back again. This can be called as circulating sheath current. When only one end is grounded, any voltage that is induced into the covering is emitted without forming a circulating current.

The single core cables lack the magnetic fields that are generated by the rest 2 phases. The sum of the 3 magnetic fields in a three phase cable is zero. As there is no cancelling effect in case of a cable with single core, the voltage gets induced in the armour through the conductor’s surrounding magnetic field.

To make sure that there is no problem, a one-conductor metal cable that have lead, stainless steel, copper, or aluminium armours has to be bonded to the ground, generally done at the source end. The rest of the length is isolated from the ground.
