Getting a lucrative job is like a dream come true. When you consider the millions who don’t have one, you should consider yourself lucky. One of the ways through which you can bring variety into your job hunting initiatives is by taking the hidden job market. This refers to those jobs that are still vacant weeks or even months after the incumbent left. The person could have been promoted, retired, found greener pastures elsewhere or passed away. After their departure, the companies they worked for never took to advertising for those jobs. If you have never tried finding hidden jobs before, here is chance to do it.

Whoever said that there are no jobs these days was a little unrealistic. True, jobs are scarce but they are there. Here are a few hidden job market avenues to explore:

Suitable employers: Whatever career you are in, finding hidden ...
... jobs can start with those employers that you have always admired to work for. Start by listing them down. For those that are within town, you can commute there and feign a reason to get past security. Once you are in get straight with the receptionist. Carry copies of your resume with you. Resume writing skills will come in handy at this point. For others, you can make cold calls and ask to speak to someone in the department you are targeting, say accounts. Take to the person politely and skew the conversation to whether the compare is a good employer and how people get in.

Get the name of a contact person: You can try finding hidden jobs by getting a name or contacts of someone in a HR. It could also be the head of department or anyone with an influence. Note the name down and the contact. Later on, contact that person and introduce yourself. State briefly that you were interested in joining the company and would be glad to be considered once opportunities arise.

Use LinkedIn: This is not meant to market the site, but it has a unique feature that you can utilize. Search for the names of people in the companies you have targeted. Preferably these are the ones you have been referred to or you know from other sources that they work there. Identify which groups they belong to and join them. Participate actively in the forums where they are members. Slowly get to them, state your skills and ask them for tips on resume writing and job hunting. You never know, someone might just tell you that they have a vacancy that has not been filled.

People you know: Contact any one you know. Tell them about yourself, current state of affairs, what you are looking for and places you would like to work in. Ask for insights on resume writing. People can be very helpful. Some will even ask for a copy of your resume. Whatever little someone does, appreciate it. They can even direct you to other friend of yours.

Use training tools and all manner of training resources at your disposal. This is the hidden job market at its best.
