Excessive weight and widening waistlines plague many of us living in Sydney due to sedentary lifestyles. In fact, around the world obesity is being held responsible for countless illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and back pain. It is therefore important to maintain a healthy weight and stay fit.

We all know that we should eat right and exercise to keep our weight in check, but many of us keep postponing the efforts involved to a distant tomorrow. Time keeps passing by and we learn to adapt to the discomfort of a heavier body and actually look for an excuse like ‘I may be over-weight but I am fairly healthy as I don’t have a disease’.

It is so important to remain motivated to lose weight. Make a small effort to help yourself. Surround yourself with family and friends who care about what happens to you. Don’t isolate yourself even if you have severe body issues and do not enjoy being in company anymore. Isolation will compound the problem whereas being in compassionate company will keep you receptive to ideas and ways to deal with excess weight.

Learn to talk to yourself about the importance of losing weight. Write down in your diary the pros and cons if you do not take any action against obesity. When you see what you have written on any day it will strengthen your resolve and be a source of motivation. Admit to yourself or a friend that your life is going to get worse physically and emotionally if you don’t lose weight. Facing our worst fears motivates us to take self-preservation action.

Write down in your diary all that you will do when you lose weight. Imagine the shopping trips, the new stylish clothing; the attention from the opposite gender, the adventurous trips and sports that you will undertake. Let this envisioning push you towards a fitter and leaner you. Remember, expert help is always at hand if you are unable to decide upon or cope with a weight-loss program on your own.
