When To Visit Evora
In the centre of the Alentejo region is the pleasant town of Evora. Lisbon is the only other Portuguese town which has more historical buildings than Evora. In Evora there are narrow cobbled streets, traditionally painted buildings and many historic monuments.
The Chapel of Bones, is the strangest sight of Evora but the macabre ambience combined with scary atmosphere makes it very popular with tourists. The Diana Temple is an amazingly well preserved Roman temple that is regarded as the best example of Roman architecture within Portugal or Spain See
Evora has a history of a slow way of life however this does not mean that the population is old and is this in part due to the large university site which is located inside the city walls. Evora is an excellent destination to visit as part of a tour of central Portugal but the area does experience extreme seasons, so prior preparing is needed.
Evora - when is the right timeof the year to go to?
The Alentejo region and Evora has 3 very distinct ...
... seasons; summer, winter and spring/autumn . Spring and autumn are very similar and could be considered as the same weather conditions for visitors who are intending to visit the region.
The summer season is extremely hot with daytime temperatures reaching 38C and this is temperature of the air in the shade, staying out in sunshine will feel considerably hotter. The summer months are the prime visitor season so all rooms will be at the most expensive. The summer heat can be extremely draining for discovering the city and tourists who visit in this time of year are recommended to follow the example of the locals. The citizens of Evora have an unfair reputation of being idle and this originates from the fact that they take very long lunchtime breaks throughout the heat of the day. Tourists should observe this example and initiate their day much sooner and avoid the sun.
For those tourists who will be hiring a car it is really preferable to pick a car that has air-con because this can be a blessing while traveling. The heat causes it to be unsuitable for small children and toddlers to be outside in the middle of the day. The one good point with the weather in Evora in the the summer months are that the heat is a dry heat with minimal humidity; therefore tourists can easily survive by increased daily water consumption (but not alcohol or coffee!)
Winter months can be unpredictable and this is the time of year when the majority of the rain occurs. The winter is the off period for Evora and the tourist trade and there can be discounts to be had with accommodation. Throughout the winter you will notice that you're the only customer at many of the main visitor sights. Since the weather can be unforeseen they can be times of gray and rain whereas there might be long periods of bright sun. Portugal's interior has significantly less rainfall and is generally warmer compared to coastal areas.
The weather of autumn and spring are quite comparable but spring is certainly the best time of year to visit the region. Early in the year the flowers are out, trees are blossoming and the fields are green all prior to the intense temperature of the summer. The climate of Evora throughout the spring months have lengthy bright warm days with ample Sun making it well suited for hiking and exploring the city. The one exception to this is the month of April that is the rainiest month apart from the winter, during this month it is best to be ready to spend a few days inside (or in the great bars).
