Photography Lenses - Information To Follow
There is a wide range of cameras to choose from, both for a beginner and a professional photographer. While the choice of a camera can be brought down to a few, there is a huge range of lenses to choose from. There are companies that manufacture only lenses as well as those that manufacture both camera and lenses. Digital SLR lenses are manufactured in all shapes and sizes and there can be a huge price variation. Camera lenses are built as per the needs of a photographer. Some are suited for professional photographers, while others are right for the casual photographer. With all the choices available for Digital SLR lenses, how does a newcomer make the right choice?
The choice of your Digital SLR lens will depend on the make of your camera. Modern day SLR cameras connect to the lens through a sensor that allows adjusting the lens aperture from the camera itself. These electronic sensors or connectors are specific to a manufacturer. This means that the lenses made by the camera manufacturer or only certain third party lenses are compatible with your camera. So, before you choose a camera, you must find out the type of ...
... lenses it is compatible with. You should find out the lens mount a camera uses. Adapters are available to help mount a lens of a different make to a camera from a different manufacturer; however, you may lose out on some functionality of the lens. Depending on the type of photography you do, it is important to know the type of lens you’ll require and hence the correct choice of a camera becomes important.
Types of Lenses
The choice of a camera lens depends upon the type of photography you are going to do. Certain photography techniques are possible with only certain types of lenses. A single camera lens may not perform all the desired functions. Listed here are a few specific camera lenses available in the market today.
Fish-eye Lenses: These lenses were originally used by astrologists. A Fish-eye lens distorts an image as it might appear when viewed through a looking glass, curved at the edges. This sort of a lens gives freedom to the photographer to capture landscapes easily.
Wide-angle Lens: A wide-angle lens, as the name suggests, is used to capture a wide range of view. It is preferred by landscape photographers as it allows to focus both on the background and the foreground, while shooting a wide landscape, which otherwise cannot be seen as clearly by the human eye.
Macro Lens: Though most of the new digital cameras come with a macro setting, this lens is suited for the avid nature photographer who likes to capture nature in its smallest detail. More suited for taking closeups of dew on the grass or a bee sitting on a flower, images that may get distorted while shooting with a normal camera. What makes this lens unique is that it removes the blur detected, while taking extreme close-ups.
Zoom Lens: Zoom lens allows you to magnify your subject by widening and shortening the focal length. A great lens for both landscapes as well as portrait photography. However, the small lens opening may make it difficult to capture a good quality photo in low light conditions. The drawback of a digital zoom is that it crops the image and reduces pixels while zooming thereby affecting the quality of a picture. Be sure to find the range of an optimal zoom as an optimal zoom keeps an image as it appears.
Telephoto Lens: A telephoto lens is suited more for capturing sports action. A telephoto lens makes the images appear closer than they are.
The purpose of a camera lens is to improve the photo quality and enhance the camera capability. Choose a lens that fits your camera and your needs.
