Dog Sports Your Dog Can Try
Allowing your dog to participate in dog sports is a great way to keep them active and healthy. Dogs who participate in sports tend to be mentally and physically stronger than dogs that do not. All dogs need exercise but some require more than a walk in order to be at their best. It also helps to give them vitamins and supplements like NuVet review
Tracking:
Dogs loves to use their nose. In fact, their sense of smell is their most dominant sense. This sport allows dogs to use their sense of smell in a fun way. This sport mimics search-and-rescue missions. It judges the dog’s ability and willingness to pick up and follow a trail left by human footsteps.
Lure coursing:
Lure coursing is an alternative to hare coursing. It is a fast-paced chase sport. Instead of chasing a live animal, dogs chase an artificial lure. The course is set up in a field, and dogs are judged on the time it takes them to successfully catch the lure. In some instances, obstacles are added to the race. Dogs have a natural ...
... chasing instinct, and this sport allows them the opportunity to act upon this instinct in a humane and safe way.
Flyball:
Flyball is a relay race involving teams made up of four dogs. One dog from each team runs down a course and jumps hurdles as he heads towards the “flyball box.” When the dog reaches the box and steps on a panel, the flyball box is triggered to release a tennis ball. The dog gets the ball and brings the ball back to its handler. Once the first dog returns to the handler, the next dog is released for its turn to complete the course. The first team that has all four of its dogs successfully complete the course wins. Flyball is a great sport for social dogs who enjoy the company of other dogs.
Dock jumping:
This sport is also referred to as dock diving. This competition involves a dog jumping from a dock into a body of water. The goal the dog is trying to accomplish is to achieve great height and distance when they jump from the dock. To get the dog to jump, a handler throws a toy off the dock. Distance is measured at the location of the dog’s tail entering the water. Jumps are often recorded for assured accuracy.
Disc dogs:
This sport is essentially a Frisbee toss game between a dog and his handler. Dogs are judged on distance and accuracy while catching the disc. The disc-dog field is divided into zones, and each catch is judged based on the zone in which the disc is caught.
Canine freestyle:
This sport is a choreographed musical performance by a dog and his handler. It is really best explained as dancing with a dog. Freestyle means almost anything goes. Routines typically involve the dog weaving through the handler’s legs, jumping, walking backwards, performing twists and moving in sync with his handler.
These are a few of the most popular dog sports in which your dog can participate. All of them combine a dog’s natural ability, willingness to please and athleticism in a fun and entertaining way.
