Chakra Points: Grounding Yourself Through The Base Chakra
The base chakra is often considered the first of seven or the second of nine major chakras, depending on the interpretation of the chakra system you are using. This center of power and consciousness is found at the very base of your spine, directly between your genitals and anus.
An easy way to find, balance, and center the base chakra is to stand up with your feet shoulder width apart and relax completely. Straighten your spine and focus on the very base of your spinal column; imagine all your weight sinking into this spot.
If you cannot stand it’s fine to do this exercises seated. Just be sure to find the base of the spine and keep your back totally straight.
Relax as completely as possible and allow your awareness to find your hips and thighs. These muscles should be bearing most of your body weight; if not shift your center until they are.
Once your upper thighs are holding most of your weight and perhaps even burning slightly you’ll know you are resting on the base chakra. Begin to breathe in very slowly and deeply, using the bottom of your lungs to pull the ...
... air in.
Find a rhythm of breathing that allows you to inhale slowly and constantly and simply allow the air to begin drifting back out of your lungs. Rather than specific inhale/exhale breathing think in terms of breathing in a circle, with the air flowing into the bottom of your lungs and then up and out in a circular motion.
Don’t get hung up on this notion of circular breath. If you can feel into it that’s fantastic but if not just keep breathing slow and deep and remain centered on the base of your spine.
After a few seconds close your eyes. You may immediately see a deep red color in your mind’s eye.
If it doesn’t occur spontaneously imagine the deep shade of red filling your eyelids. Begin to imagine your breath is this same color, and visualize a deep, glowing red energy filling your lungs and then flowing back out as you breathe.
Perform this exercise for three to ten minutes or just until you are led to stop. Once you’re finished your base chakra will likely be centered, opened, and balanced. Repeat this exercise as part of your normal meditation and stretching, and especially any time you feel flighty, spaced out, in a waking dream state, unconfident, or unhappy with your body.
The base chakra is the center of confidence, groundedness, unmovable resolve, and healthy liver and blood vessel function. Feel into the element of earth, and the literal stability of the earth herself when thinking about or visualizing this center.
A weak base chakra can cause you to feel helpless, out of control, or physically inadequate in a variety of ways. However if this chakra becomes overactive you may feel irrationally stubborn and inflexible, and/or you may become enraged at the slightest provocation.
Always remember the value of balance when working with your chakras. You want a healthy amount of energy flowing through each center; never too little or too much as you’ll experience discomfort and various issues in either state of imbalance.
Enjoy contemplating your base chakra. Feeling comfortable with this center is the gateway to the next six chakra points along your spine.
