Many websites on the Internet are available that can supply a variety of free papers for students ranging from high school through PhD programs. These papers run the gambit from simple book reports all the way up to complicated dissertations with full references. The availability of such a wide range of papers and their generally free availability on the Internet make them quite a useful resource for struggling student. How the student chooses to use these resources will lead to either the rise or the eventual demise of these popular texts.

To what degree the student uses the free papers that are available online can have both a beneficial as well as a detrimental effect on the students' college experience and future career. Many students use these free resources as a guide when creating their own papers. The availability of previously referenced material in a proper format is invaluable for students who have a weak grammatical background or are new to the college experience and the scheduling of their assignments to submit them on time. Examining these resources and the information that they contain and using that as ...
... a starting point for their own paper is perfectly valid. Reading others' work and previously published reference material has always been used as the foundation for essays and documents. When used this way, the freely available material is just another source of reference material. Unfortunately, this material is also being used in its original format simply by cutting and pasting.

Copying someone else's work whether intentionally or unintentionally and presenting it as your own is plagiarism. With the availability of broadband access to the Internet, the amount of information that can be referenced, copied and assembled into writing assignments is staggering. Many students have the misguided notion that with such a large variety of free papers, from a vast number of sources, that their ability to indiscriminately use large tracts of text in their documents would be untraceable. This is simply not the case. With the availability of anti-plagiarism websites such as plagiarism.org and detection software from companies such as iPlagiarisms Inc., the ability to include large portions of other people's text in your own documents is becoming harder to accomplish. The ease at which this information is available online can also have an effect where a large number of students who are writing about the same topic submit identical portions of the information when the text is simply cut and pasted into their own documents.

Due to the combined efforts of universities, software companies and the general public desire for an increase in ethics at the university level, the clamping down of plagiarism on the college campus is occurring. The consequences of been caught plagiarizing can lead to expulsion from the college, and forfeiture of tuition. The application of common sense and ethics can play a great role here. The use of free papers as reference material is beneficial and will probably continue but technology is being used to ensure that this material is not being used as a substitute for the creative effort and hard work of the student.
