In an effort to correct this problem, an increasing number of business owners and managers have started to use employee Internet monitoring tools to keep track of what each employee is doing online. This type of software is often referred to as “spyware” and with good reason – you may not even realize that your boss is using it! If management discovers that you’re wasting time at work through use of employee computer monitoring, you may risk a reprimand or even worse.

The vast majority of U.S. employees now carry smart phones with them to work. You may be thinking that there’s nothing wrong with logging onto the Internet for personal reasons as long as it’s on your own device and not one owned by the company. But think again! Just because your boss can’t track how you use your smart phone doesn’t make it okay to use it for personal business at your office. Whether you use a work computer or your own personal device, wasting time at work is never a smart idea. Not only is it unfair to your boss and your fellow coworkers, but it puts your company at risk as well.

It’s important to remember that ...
... any company is only as good as the employees who work there. The more time employees waste during work hours, the more money the company loses. The more money the company loses, the more endangered its future becomes. We’ve all heard countless stories of people who’ve lost their jobs because their company closes, so why in the world would you do anything to compromise the future of your own company?

Having said all this, it is true that there may be occasions when you need to do personal business online during work hours. If and when you need to do that, just let your boss know that you’ll need a few minutes to take care of some personal tasks online and that you’ll be sure to do it either on a break or during your lunch hour. Letting your boss know is smart for two reasons: 1) if your supervisor is using some form of employee Internet monitoring, your personal use of your online access won’t be a poor reflection on your job performance, and 2) this will encourage your boss to trust that you’ll do the right thing in the future.

The next time you’re tempted to use the Internet for personal business at work, remember how common employee computer monitoring has become. If you value your job and the company you work for, keep focused and don’t abuse your online access at work!
