Ford Creates Tuskegee Airmen–inspired Red Tails Edition Mustang Gt
For horsepower enthusiasts, one of the neat things about the Ford Mustang is that its name was inspired by the 1490-hp, 437-mph P-51 World War II–era fighter. What's really neat for both sets of Mustang enthusiasts is that Ford Engineering and Design has pieced together the Red Tails Edition Mustang GT.
What makes this Mustang GT unique is the paint scheme influenced by the aircraft flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, the fighter squadron comprised of African-American pilots famous for their red-tailed Mustangs. The Red Tails Edition Mustang GT features a unique, polished-aluminum nonproduction paint with Race Red and School Bus Yellow accents, as well as markings unique to the Tuskegee Airmen as part of the 332nd Fighter Group.
Perhaps equally as cool is the side-exit exhaust system inspired by the exhaust of the Packard-manufactured, Rolls-Royce–designed V-12 propelling the P-51. In addition to the quad finishers exiting beneath the front left fender, the Red Tails Edition Mustang GT also gets the familiar SVT quad exhaust out back—eight exhaust outlets in all. Other performance upgrades include adding a Ford ...
... Racing 2.3-liter twin-screw Whipple supercharger to the GT's 420-hp, 5.0-liter V-8; the Brembo brakes and the rear diffuser from the Shelby GT500; and 20-inch wheels.
The Red Tails Edition Mustang GT's interior houses a modified navigation screen and instrument panel, and the rear seats are taken out to save weight. The Recaro seats and doorsills are embroidered with the Red Tails logo, and the floor mats get the 332nd Fighter Group logo.
The Red Tails Edition Mustang GT is the fourth car to be made to benefit the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles program. In 2008, there was the Mustang AV8R, which was modeled after the F-22 Raptor and sold for an event record of $500,000. The AV-X10 “Dearborn Doll” Mustang of 2009 also was inspired by its WWII namesake. In 2010, former pilots Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush teamed up to create the SR-71 Blackbird Mustang. In 2011, a Blue Angels Mustang celebrated the 100th anniversary of United States naval aviation.
