While cheap travel deals, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms and cheap vacation packages are great ways to afford getting away, a little research can help you find fascinating things to do for free at many destinations.

The following are some of the most popular free activities around the country:

• Washington, D.C. Memorials, including the Washington Monument, and the Jefferson, Lincoln, and FDR memorials and memorials to veterans of World War II the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well as the National Mall cost nothing to visit.

• All of the famous Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. offer free admission, including the National Air & Space museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Zoo.

• Great Smoky Mountains National park is a vast forest wilderness in North Carolina and Tennessee and one of the most visited national parks in the country. It is also one a few national parks that still offer free admission.

• The Golden Gate Bridge is a site to behold. Tourists love strolling the east sidewalk promenade of this San Francisco landmark, ...
... stretching high above the waters of the Golden Gate Strait. It is a real treat to walk, bike, and for some, even dine, on the bridge.

• The National September 11 Memorial and Museum is an 8 acre memorial to those killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Impressive waterfalls cascade into two reflecting pools set into the site of the World Trade Center’s original Twin Towers.

• Mount Rushmore is South Dakota’s top attraction and home to 60 foot heads of four American presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lincoln.

• The Hana Highway on the island of Maui is a corkscrew 70 mile road that follows Hawaiian countryside where visitors can enjoy checking out taro fields, rain forests, and memorable seascapes.

• Central Park in Manhattan (NYC) is an 843 acre of urban green that is an oasis for city dwellers and visitors alike. Summer productions of Shakespeare in the Park are offered for free.

• The Alamo in San Antonio Texas is the site of the historic battle for Texan independence. Make sure to check out the Heritage Tree, a huge live oak on the grounds.

• Mardi Gras in New Orleans costs nothing to revel in the spectacle of the music, plumage, and floats. Even souvenirs can be had for free by catching beads and doubloons that are flung from parade floats.
