SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI — Barnett-Davis Dental Group offers patients MI Paste, another way to combat common dental issues like white spots on teeth, frequent cavities, dry mouth and sensitivity to cold or sweets.

“MI Paste is a prescription-strength product that releases vital minerals into the mouth that help stimulate saliva flow, strengthen teeth and protect enamel,” said Dr. Kelly Barnett, the founder of the Springfield, Missouri family dentistry practice.

White spots on a tooth are the earliest indicator of a cavity. They are areas of the tooth’s enamel that have demineralized, a process where the tooth loses calcium and phosphate, allowing cavities to form. They are caused by prolonged plaque accumulation on the tooth’s surface due to lax dental hygiene.

“This paste can mitigate much of the damage caused by previous dental neglect, but it is essential for the patient to commit to better dental hygiene habits to maintain the results,” said Dr. Tracy Davis, an Invisalign provider in Ozark.

To keep teeth strong and gums free of periodontal disease, patients should visit the dental ...
... office twice a year for preventive dental care, professional cleanings and examinations. Good dental hygiene also means brushing for at least three minutes twice a day and flossing daily to remove the plaque trapped in areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.

“It can be very difficult to gauge how long you’ve been brushing your teeth if you’re not making a point to keep track,” said Dr. Nick Matthews. “Ensure that you’re brushing long enough by setting a timer or investing in a toothbrush that has a timer built into it.”

MI Paste is designed to be used as part of routine dental care or as a special application at the dental office. The water-based, sugar-free paste is applied directly to the oral cavity or on the teeth’s surface after brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste. The active ingredient of MI Paste is RECALDENT (CPP-ACP), a milk-derived phosphopeptide that binds calcium and phosphate to tooth surfaces, plaque and surrounding soft tissue. The flavor of the paste — melon, mint, strawberry, tutti-frutti or vanilla — stimulates saliva flow while the active ingredient binds calcium and phosphate to teeth surfaces, plaque and soft tissue. When left undisturbed in the mouth, it can release calcium and phosphate ions for more than three hours.

“Not all demineralization or white spot lesions are the result of poor dental hygiene though,” said Dr. Marc Barnett, a dentures provider. “An acid imbalance in the oral cavity resulting in demineralizing teeth can be caused by many, many other things, such as aging, medication side effects, systemic disease, pregnancy, heartburn and consuming sport drinks, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee and alcoholic beverages.”

MI Paste is useful for many common dental problems: (http://www.mi-paste.com/about.php)

• Provides extra protection for teeth
• Creates a buffer against acids produced by bacteria and plaque
• Comforts dry mouth caused by certain medications
• Minimizes tooth sensitivity before and after professional cleaning
• Reduces high oral acid levels from consuming excessive soft drinks
• Lowers high oral acid levels that may be caused by pregnancy
• Decreases sensitivity after teeth whitening procedures
• Conditions teeth during and after orthodontic visits

"MI Paste is highly recommended for patients who have a high risk of dental caries and want an extra preventive measure,” said Davis. “The reason this paste is so effective is because it works with the mouth’s natural plaque-fighting tool — saliva — to strengthen tooth enamel, minimize sensitivity and prevent white spot lesions.”
