There was a time when promoter chairman of DLF, KP Singh had almost sold DLF Company in just Rs. 26 lakhs in 1975 but at the last moment he changed his mind on a friend’s suggestion and that changed his life too. This has been described in detail in his autobiography "Whatever the Odds: The Incredible Story behind DLF". In his book, Kushal Pal Sing who established DLF as the biggest real estate company in country has described the story very interestingly behind the expansion and taking the business on the peak of success against all adverse circumstances.

DLF was established in 1947 by Chaudhary Raghvendra Singh, Father in law of KP Singh, but this business could not get much success that time because of Govt.’s decision of declaring the DDA as the only agency for the development of National Capital. Other hand it was also not easy to start and establish the business for private developers because of different strict and complex laws in Haryana. The whole journey of KP Singh from going to school barefooted to becoming the owner of DLF is very interesting and inspiring. In his book he says.’ My father sent me to England discarding all his personal comforts.’

January, 1975 was biggest turning point of KP Singh’s life and DLF. Singh was about to sell his share in DLF on his father in law’s decision as company was not having any big project and facing bad time. Singh says” he had cheques of Rs. 26 lakhs of his total shares in front of him and i was completely about to leave the company taking that amount. That time the Chief finance officer (CFO) of DLF Mr. Tyal, who was sent by my father in law with share transfer form said that you would be entirely detached from the company once you signed this agreement, Consider on this carefully. I would be retired in some weeks but what I felt I said and it was my moral responsibly.”

Singh admits himself that it was a wake up call for him. At last Singh dropped his decision of selling his share on one of his friend’s suggestion. And today he is the owner of country’s biggest real estate company. “Singh’s struggle in life is not unusual or one and only in world but it is an endeavor story of flourishing the business and taking it on peak of success despite of all opposed conditions.”
