Being Prepared For An Emergency Electrical Blackout
The last thing anyone wants to deal with is an electrical blackout. Nonetheless, blackouts do occur. Sometimes, the local utility company is not the greatest, which puts you at a higher risk of a blackout. Of course, other factors can also contribute to a blackout situation. High winds and strong storms can lead to a power outage, as can an accident that causes a pole to get knocked down or causes wires to be knocked loose. Regardless of the cause of the blackout, you want to be as prepared for the blackout as you can possibly by.
One good way to be prepared for an electrical blackout is to put together an emergency blackout kit before disaster strikes. There are several items you should consider including in your emergency blackout kit. These include:
Candles or oil lamps - be sure to include matches for lighting and oil for the lamps
A flashlight or other source of light - be sure to include batteries for the light
Updated directory of the house circuitry
A tool kit containing the tools necessary to make electrical repairs
A circuit tester
Wirenuts
Electrical ...
... tape
Replacement plug fuses, cartridge fuses and pull circuit breaker
Several different types of lightbulbs
Replacement duplex receptacle, single pole switch and any other special switches
In addition to having the proper tools and equipment in your emergency blackout kit, you should also have some basic electrical repair knowledge. The best way to do this is to take some electrical courses, at which you can gain the knowledge necessary to make several common household electrical repairs. Even if you don't plan on becoming an electrician as a profession, taking some of these courses can help you gain the knowledge and confidence necessary to handle an emergency blackout situation.
After the emergency situation has passed, you might want to consider hiring a certified electrician to inspect the work that you performed. This way, you can be certain the repairs are correct and that you did not mistakenly create a hazardous situation for you and your family. Still, being able to make the electrical repairs yourself can save you a great deal of time and hassle, as it can be difficult to get an electrician to your home quickly when an emergency situation arises that affects many households. The key is to be properly prepared ahead of time.
