Most people erroneously believe that log homes aren’t eco-friendly as trees are cut to create a home. But researches over the years have revealed that log cabins are the most eco-friendly homes with lowest carbon footprint. There are several reasons behind reduced carbon footprint of log homes that makes them a green building solution. Some of them are-

Logs used

Obviously, logs are used in cabin kits. But that doesn’t mean increased carbon footprint. In fact, a vast majority of kit manufacturers use logs from standing dead trees. By cutting these dead trees, they provide space for new plants to grow. Therefore, it is like an indirect reforestation program that allows sustainable, eco-friendly production of log homes and thereby reduces carbon footprint.

Thermal Mass

Logs have higher thermal mass, which makes log homes more rustic, less complex and energy efficient. Since higher thermal mass ensures that the temperatures take time to change, hence cooling and heating becomes more affordable and easier. Most of the kits come with drywall insulation option, which is cheap, reduces lesser ...
... toxic solutions and chemicals that further reduce carbon footprint, making log homes a more convenient and eco-friendly living option. Moreover, indoor quality of air is improved with such insulators, reducing the occurrence of asthma and ensuring better health experience.

Sustainable

Log cabins are perfect example of sustainable living. They don’t need as much transportation as other building materials, require less of toxic materials and chemicals that are used in regular construction, are more chic and beautiful. Plus, they are energy efficient as they can be well lit and insulated without burning a hole in pocket. Cabin kits now come with more eco-friendly resources like sundried bricks from mud sand along with baled straw stacks that allow for more sustainable wall insulation.

Recycling

Just because logs have been used in building of a cabin doesn’t mean that they can’t be used again. Logs and lumber can be recycled from salvaged homes and buildings and used for making new cabins. The utility is increased. Also, the recycled process is clean and doesn’t use chemicals that increase carbon footprint. In fact, toxic chemicals are used in manufacturing or conventional home items like vinyl siding and hard-plank.

Milling logs

Milled logs have a benefit. The by-product that is produced after logs have been shaved and sawdust can be used for farming and as scrap to build cheaper wood products, including furniture and fences.

Energy efficiency and reduced waste

Since by products can be used for a variety of purposes, overall waste in production of log home is reduced. Cabin kits come with a number of energy efficient products such as lights and insulation, which allows these homes to become more affordable and energy efficient. At the same time, these homes don’t emit VOC’s and other pollutants found in paint or chemicals used in conventional home construction. Hence, they reduce their carbon footprint.

Log cabins are definitely a more sustainable and eco-friendly way to live in affordable and natural way!
